OpenAI Codex Micro is OpenAI’s first Hardware Product

Designed with Work Louder, the Open AI Codex Micro brings the end user’s agent workspace into reach, through live RGB feedback, and giving the user the ability to map their most-used Codex actions to tactile controls.

Each Agent key lights up with a live RGB status from Codex, so the user can determine the status, such as thinking, running, waiting, or done. The device includes the Codex Icon Keyset with 32 extra keycaps.

Capabilities of the Codex Micro include:

  • Triggering Skills: Flick the joystick to launch common Codex workflows like reviewing a PR, debugging an error, or refactoring code.
  • Shortcuts: Command keys give most-used actions a dedicated shortcut: accept, reject, push-to-talk, start a new chat, and more.
  • Adjustable reasoning speed: Turn the dial to adjust reasoning level in the moment, such as increase speed when the work calls for heavier thinking.


The Codex Micro connects via Bluetooth or USB-C, is compatible with Mac and Windows, and features 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, rotary encoder and planar joystick, along with a customisable keyset comprising 32 icon keycaps and 11 solid-colour keycaps.

A first for OpenAI’s Codex

OpenAI Codex Micro is OpenAI’s first hardware product, developed in partnership with specialist keyboard maker Work Louder. Rather than being a new AI device, it’s a programmable desktop macro pad designed to make interacting with OpenAI’s AI coding agent, which is called Codex, faster and more tactile.

Codex is designed to help developers by writing code from natural language prompts, explaining and debugging code and editing existing codebases. Codex can generate tests and documentation, work across multiple files and repositories, and carry out longer-running software engineering tasks autonomously.

Unlike traditional code completion tools, Codex can act as an AI software engineering agent, taking on more complex development tasks with limited supervision.

The new controller is designed specifically to interact with Codex, providing dedicated physical controls for launching and managing coding tasks. It is placed alongside a keyboard and provides dedicated physical controls for Codex so that developers can spend less time navigating menus and more time writing code.

It’s not intended as a mass-market consumer product, but it signals a future where AI devices are increasingly “the norm”.
